The WA Sires Produce Stakes is a set weights event for two-year-olds and will most likely attract horses who contested the Gr2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) two weeks earlier. This race is an extra 200m in distance and the logical next race for 2yo gallopers from the Plate.
Motion Pictures (2010), Brava Fortune (2008) and Roman Time (2007) all won the Karrakatta Plate & Sires Produce Stakes double and a number of horses including Wolfe Dreams (2nd in 2009) have ran placings in both races over the past few years. The Karrakatta Plate is well worth keeping an eye on when looking for the likely contenders in this race.
Held during the Perth autumn carnival at Ascot, the WA Sires Produce Stakes winner is more often than not just a handy galloper, rather than a topliner, as most of the best two-year-olds will be in Sydney during the autumn for the prestigious Gr1 Golden Slipper Stakes.
Motion Pictures won the Karrakatta Plate on his way to victory in this event and recent winners of the WA Sires Produce Stakes include God Has Spoken (2009) and Brava Fortune (2008).
