The VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a Group 3 quality handicap race held at Flemington racecourse annually during the Melbourne spring carnival in November. It is run over a distance of 2500 metres for stayers and is worth $250,000 in prizemoney. The 2009 VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes was taken out by New Zealand galloper Sterling Prince from Crossthestart with Naval Escort third.
Held on Emirates Stakes day, which is the last day of the four day Flemington carnival, the VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes takes place alongside two quality feature Group 1 races, the Emirates Stakes and Patinack Farm Classic.

The VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a handicap race over 2500m and suits horses that raced previously in either the Caulfield Cup or Moonee Valley Cup or occasionally a Melbourne Cup entrant may back up in this race on the following Saturday.
Horses contesting this event may head on towards the Sandown Classic the following week and it is a race for above average stayers, rather than the elite, although it has been won by some quality types over the years, including triple Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva (2002) and Might and Power in 1998.
In recent years the VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes has been won by Capecover (2008), Zavite (2007) and Gallant Guru in 2006.

2009 Queen Elizabeth Stakes: Sterling Prince enjoyed an easy run four back on the fence and took advantage of the very fast pace set by Alexander Of Hales and ran to the lead inside the 200m and kicked clear to score in good fashion. Crossthestart came home well to get second ahead of Naval Escort who was doing his best work at the finish and ran on into third place.
