Thoroughbred Club Stakes

The Thoroughbred Club Stakes is a Group 3 set weights & penalties race held annually at Caulfield racecourse during the Melbourne spring racing carnival in October. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres and worth $125,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Thoroughbred Club Stakes was won by Platelet from The Fairy's Kiss with Hollyweird third.

Taking place on the first day of the three-day Caulfield spring carnival, the Thoroughbred Club Stakes is held on Guineas Day alongside the Gr1 Caulfield Guineas, Gr1 Toorak Handicap and Gr1 Yalumba Stakes.

The Thoroughbred Club Stakes is a three-year-old fillies race that attracts moderate to handy fillies that generally don't figure in many of the big spring races ahead. Winners and placegetters are capable of picking up a lower quality fillies event on any of the major race days, but rarely go on to win a major Group 1 race.

The race takes place on Caulfield Guineas day and fillies tend to come to this race via the Gr3 Champagne Stakes at Moonee Valley on Manikato Stakes night.

Platelet (2011) ran second in the Gr3 Champagne Stakes over 1200m at Moonee Valley prior to winning this event and recent Thoroughbred Club Stakes winners have been Solar Charged (2010) and Avenue (2009).

Spring Carnival Guide
Avenue (2009) went on to win the Gr3 Red Anchor Stakes on WS Cox Plate day at Moonee Valley, while Headway (2nd in 2009) won the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on Derby day.

Gamble Me (2007) went on the win the listed Red Roses Stakes on Crown Oaks day of the same spring, and Belcentra (3rd in 2007) took out the listed Desirable Stakes on Melbourne Cup day two days earlier.
