The Stutt Stakes is a Group 2 race for three-year-olds that is held on a Friday night at Moonee Valley racecourse in Melbourne during the spring racing carnival. The race is held annually over a distance of 1600 metres and raced under set weight conditions with $200,000 in prizemoney. The 2009 Stutt Stakes was taken out by Carrara from Extra Hero with Miss With Attitude third.

The Stutt Stakes is the first 1600 metre group event of the spring specifically for three-year-olds and is held almost two weeks before one of the bigger 3yo races of the spring, the Gr1 Caulfield Guineas at Caulfield over the same distance.
The race is not always contested by the best three-year-olds going around, and generally lacks a top class performer as such, but over the years some good horses have saluted, including Whobegotyou (2008), Encosta De Lago(1996), Canny Lad(1990), Zabeel(1989) and Almurtajaz in 1988.
Carrara (2009) went on to finish runner-up to Starspangledbanner in the Caulfield Guineas after winning this race and recent winners of the Stutt Stakes have been Whobegotyou (2008), Barbaricus (2007) and Churchill Downs in 2006.

Carrara (2009) ran second in the Caufield Guineas at his next start, while Whobetgotyou (2008) went on to win the Caulfield Guineas, before scoring in the AAMI Vase later in the spring and finishing runner-up in the Victoria Derby.
Helenus (2002) went on to win the Caulfield Guineas at his next start and Maybe Better (3rd in 2005) ran a great race to finish third in the 2006 Melbourne Cup.
The winner of the Stutt Stakes is more often than not a handy or above average three-year-old, who is more than competitive in 3yo events run under similar conditions without really going on to do anything significant in the major spring races to come. Occasionally there are exceptions and the race is taken out by a quality galloper, such as Whobegotyou in 2008.

2009 Stutt Stakes: Carrara led rounding the turn and kicked clear momentarily in the straight before having to defy a challenge at the 100m mark from eventual runner-up Extra Hero. Carrara held on to win in a close photo finish from Extra Hero who was gallant in defeat, while the filly Miss With Attitude ran on for third without ever looking likely.
