The race is a 1400 metres event with over $150,000 in prizemoney. The 2009 Stan Fox Stakes was won by Denman from Run For Naara with More Than Great in third place.

The Stan Fox Stakes is a good quality set weights event for three-year-olds and has a history of providing winners that go on to be fairly good horses. Some very good types such as Lonhro (2001), Kenwood Melody (1998), General Nediym (1997), Octagonal (1995), and Show County (1989) have been successful in this race.
Races such as the Gr1 Golden Rose at Rosehill or the Gr3 Spring Stakes at Newcastle are typical lead up races to this event. The Stan Fox Stakes takes place on Gr1 George Main Stakes day which is one week before the Gr1 Epsom Handicap.
Denman (2009) won the Golden Rose prior to winning this race and in recent years the Stan Fox Stakes has been won by Dreamscape (2008), race not run in 2007, and Court Command in 2006.

2009 Stan Fox Stakes: Denman sat off the pace behind the leader before biding his time and making his move around the 250m mark and kicked clear to win in good style. Run For Naara came from last rounding the turn to make good ground and just snatch second from More Than Great who finished third after making a brief challenge in the straight.
