The Spring Champion Stakes is the major race for three-year-olds during the Sydney spring racing carnival and takes place on Epsom Handicap day each year in early October. The race is a Group 1 event run over a distance of 2000 metres and worth $300,000 in prizemoney.
The 2009 Spring Champion Stakes was won in 2009 by New Zealand galloper Monaco Consul from Gathering with Viking Legend third.
Epsom Handicap Day features three other quality Group 1 races alongside the Spring Champion Stakes, which are the Epsom Handicap (1600m) an open handicap, The Metropolitan (2400m) for stayers, and the Flight Stakes (1600m) for 3yo fillies.

The Spring Champion Stakes is a good horse's race and tends to attract quality three-year-olds every year for the running of this middle distance race over 2000m. Logical lead up races are the Gr2 Gloaming Stakes (1800) held two weeks earlier at Rosehill or the listed Dulcify Quality (2000m) run the previous week at Randwick.
The Spring Chamipon Stakes has been a springboard for many fine three-year-olds over the years who have gone on to become top class gallopers after winning this race.
Quality gallopers to win this event include Universal Prince (2000), Dignity Dancer (1998), Tie The Knot (1997), Nothin' Leica Dane (1995), Kinjite (1991), St. Jude (1990), Stylish Century (1989), and champion galloper Kingston Town in 1979.
Monaco Consul (2009) went to Melbourne the next month to take out the Gr1 Victoria Derby in a top performance. Recent winners of the Spring Champion Stakes have been Sousa (2008), race not held in 2007, and Teranaba in 2006.

2009 Spring Champion Stakes: New Zealander Monaco Consul came through along the fence at the top of the rise and sprinted very quickly to reel in race leader Gathering to score a comfortable win on a very heavy track. Gathering led all the way until being collared close to home and held on to second place from Viking Legend who had every chance along the inside rail and battled on to finish third.
