Shannon Stakes

The Shannon Stakes is a Group 2 handicap race for 3yo and upward horses held each year at Rosehill racecourse during the Sydney spring racing carnival each September. The race is run over a distance of 1500 metres and worth $175,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Shannon Stakes was won by King Lionheart from Fast Clip with Lone Command third.

Taking place on Gr2 Stan Fox Stakes, the Shannon Stakes is held on the second day of the three-day Randwick carnival and was held at Rosehill for the 2011/2012 racing season.

The Shannon Stakes is a quality handicap and the conditions of the race suits horses on the up who can get in with a light weight and beat the handicapper. The race has been won by some classy types over the years including Al Mansour (2000), Armed for Action (1998) and Juggler (1996).

Makybe Diva's half brother Musket (2008) managed to win this race in fine style, while top galloper Rangirangdoo (2nd in 2009) went on to win the Gr2 Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley during the Melbourne spring racing carnival after placing in this event.

Any capable gallopers contesting this race might decide to go on and tackle the feature mile race of the spring at Randwick the following week, the Gr1 Epsom Handicap, and Sacred Choice (3rd in 2010) went on to run third in the Epsom Handicap at her next start after finishing third in this race.

King Lionheart (2011) won a BM80 handicap race over 1500m at Rosehill prior to winning this race and recent Shannon Stakes winners have been Firebolt (2010) and Drumbeats (2009).
