Schweppes Stakes

The Schweppes Stakes is a Group 2 weight-for-age race that takes place at Moonee Valley during the Melbourne spring racing carnival in October each year. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres and worth $300,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Schweppes Stakes was won by Black Caviar from Doubtful Jack with Here De Angels third.

Formerly the AJ Moir Stakes, the Schweppes Stakes is held on the same day as the Moonee Valley Racing Club's premier weight-for-age event of the spring, the Group1 WS Cox Plate.

The Schweppes Stakes is the major weight-for-age sprint event of the spring for the Moonee Valley Racing Club and while it does not have the status of races like the Gr1 Manikato Stakes on Grand Final eve at the same track or the Gr1 Patinack Farm Classic at Flemington on Emirates Day, the race often attracts quality sprinters as history shows.

Over the years, top class gallopers such as Black Caviar (2010), Apache Cat (2009), Miss Andretti (2007), Falvelon (2002), Schillaci (1992) and With Me (1990-91) have all won this race.

The Schweppes Stakes is a race that suits good weight-for-age horses, especially those with an affinity for the tight Moonee Valley race track and the Gr2 Schillaci Stakes has been a good guide in previous years.

Black Caviar (2010-11) won the Schillaci Stakes for the second successive year on her way to winning this event for the second year in a row and recent Schweppes Stakes winners include Apache Cat (2009) and Lucky Secret (2008).

Black Caviar (2010) went on the win the Patinack Farm Classic at Flemington on Emirates Day, while Hot Danish (2nd in 2010) finished third in the Gr1 Myer Classic on the same day.
