The Salinger Stakes is a Group 2 open handicap race held at Flemington racecourse annually during the Melbourne spring carnival in late October or early November. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres and worth $300,000 in prizemoney. The 2009 Salinger Stakes was won by Eagle Falls from Turffontein with Absolutelyfabulous
The race is run down the 1200m straight course and has previously been known as 'The Age Classic' and 'Linlithgow Stakes'. It was raced at weight-for-age before being renamed the Salinger Stakes in 2007 and moved to Derby Day and run as a handicap.
The Salinger Stakes is held on Derby day which is the first day of the four day Flemington spring racing carnival. Derby day features four Group 1 races, the AAMI Victoria Derby, Coolmore Stud Stakes, Mackinnon Stakes, and the Myer Classic.

The Salinger Stakes is a good horse's race and tends to attract quality sprinters who may have previously tackled races like the Gr2 Caulfield Sprint at Caulfield or the Gr2 Schweppes Stakes at Moonee Valley.
Run down the Flemington 1200m 'Straight Six' course it suits those who can handle the straight track as opposed to racing around a turn. The race is generally a sustained pressure event and winners need to be able run a strong 1200m.
Quality types to salute in this race include TakeoverTarget (2004), Flavour (1998), Gold Ace (1996), Hareeba (1994) and Special in 1988. Horses contesting this event may head towards the Gr1 Patinack Farm Classic on the final day of the Flemington carnival.
Eagle Falls (2009) ran fourth in the Gr2 Caulfield Sprint prior to winning this race and in recent years the Salinger Stakes has been won by Hot Danish (2008), Swick (2007) and Dance Hero in 2006.

The last galloper to win the Caulfield Sprint & Salinger Stakes double was Toledo (1998), while Our Egyptian Raine (2003), Al Mansour (1997), Sequalo (1994), Placid Ark (1987), Scamanda (1976) all won the Schweppes Stakes before winning this event.
Glamour Puss (2005) and Pharien (1999) are the only two horses to go on and win the Patinack Farm Classic in recent times.

2009 Salinger Stakes: Eagle Falls was always handy down the flat side and got to the lead inside the 200m and kept going strongly to score a good win from Turffontein who came down the grandstand side to finish second while Absolutelyfabulous also came down the grandstand side to run home strongly into third place.
