The Roman Consul Stakes is a quality three-year-old event that is raced under set weight conditions and favours the classier three-year-olds engaged. The race has been won by many good gallopers throughout the years.
Top 3yo gallopers such as Exceed and Excel (2003), Encounter (1997), Anthems (1996), Our Maizcay (1995) have all won this race, and it has been a stepping stone to better things for many a good three-year-old.
Shellscrape (2009) went on to run third in the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes on Derby day in Melbourne later in the spring and recent winners of the Roman Consul Stakes have been Montana Flyer (2008), the race was not held in 2007, and Reigning to Win in 2006.

2009 Roman Consul Stakes: Cerinthe went out fast in front which set it up for something to come from behind and Shellscrape bided his time before unleashing at the 200m mark and left them standing to win in spectacular fashion by around 4.5L in the slow conditions. Honest Truth battled on for second while Shadow Assassin ran on fairly to get third.
