Roman Consul Stakes

The Roman Consul Stakes is a Group 2 set weights race for three-year-olds held annually at Randwick racecourse during the Sydney spring racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres and worth $175,000 in prizemoney. The 2012 Roman Consul Stakes was won by Jolie Bay from Knight Exemplar with Your Song third.

The Roman Consul Stakes is held on Epsom Day which also includes feature Group 1 races, the Epsom Handicap, The Metropolitan, Spring Champion Stakes and Flight Stakes.

The Roman Consul Stakes is a quality three-year-old event that is raced under set weight conditions and favours the classier three-year-olds engaged. The race has been won by many good gallopers throughout the years.

Top three-year-olds Exceed and Excel (2003), Encounter (1997), Anthems (1996) and Our Maizcay (1995) have all won this race and it has been a stepping stone to better things for many a good three-year-old.

In recent times, Shellscrape (2009) went on to run third in the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes on Derby day in Melbourne after winning this event.

Joile Bay (2012) won a Class 1 event over 1000m at Hawkesbury on her way to winning this event and recent Roman Consul Stakes winners have been Foxwedge (2011) and Buffering (2010).
