The Railway Stakes is a Group 1 open handicap race held annually at Ascot racecourse in Perth, Western Australia each November during the Perth summer racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and worth $1,000,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Railway Stakes was won by Luckygray from He's Remarkable with Westriver Kevydonn third.
The feature mile event of the summer carnival in Perth, the Railway Stakes takes place on Festival of Perth Racing's Super Saturday alongside the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes and two weeks before the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic on the final day of the carnival.
The Railway Stakes is the biggest race held during the Perth summer racing carnival and with prizemoney of $1,000,000 it has become a very prestigous event in Western Australia. Horses from the recently finished Melbourne spring racing carnival may head towards this race for the big dollars on offer, while the Gr3 Asian Beau Stakes and Gr3 RJ Peters Stakes are considered key lead up races to this event.
The hot conditions in Perth favours local horses, especially those who have a good record in the race. Winners and placegetters might consider going on to tackle the other prominent race in the summer, the Gr1 Kingston Town Classic in a fortnight at the same track.
Luckygray (2011) won the Asian Beau Stakes on his way to winning this event via protest from New Zealand galloper He's Remarkable (second against first) and recent Railway Stakes winners include Gathering (2010) and Sniper's Bullet (2009).
