Railway Stakes

The Railway Stakes is a Group 1 open handicap race held annually at Ascot racecourse in Perth, Western Australia each November. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and worth $1,000,000 in prizemoney. The 2009 Railway Stakes was won by Snipers Bullet from Tarzi with Colour Correct third.

The Railway Stakes is the biggest race held during the Perth summer racing carnival and with prizemoney of $1,000,000 it has become a very prestigous event in Western Australia. Horses from the recently finished Melbourne spring carnival may head towards this race for the big dollars on offer, while the Gr3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) and Gr3 RJ Peters Stakes (1500m) are considered key lead up races to this event.

The hot conditions in Perth favours local horses, especially those who have a good record in the race. Winners and placegetters might consider going on to tackle the other prominent race in the summer, the Gr1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m), in a fortnight at the same track.

Sniper's Bullet (2009) went on to score the Railway Stakes & Kingston Town Classic double and in recent times the Railway Stakes has been won by Gilded Venom (2008), El Presidente (2007) and Belle Bizarre in 2006.

2009 Railway Stakes: Sniper’s Bullet went forward from his wide gate to race on the pace before slipping away on the home turn to hold on for a good win. Local galloper Tarzi got home strongly to grab second from fellow Perth galloper Colour Correct who ran a big race for third after being wide all the way.
