The Newcastle Cameron Handicap is a Group 3 open handicap race held each September on a Wednesday over 1300 metres at Broadmeadow racecourse in Newcastle during the Sydney spring racing carnival in New South Wales. The race is worth $150,000 in prizemoney and was taken out in 2009 by the mare Absolutelyfabulous who defeated Black Piranha with McClintock finishing in third place.
Newcastle is located about 200km north of Sydney and Cameron Handicap day takes place on the Wednesday to form part of the two day Newcastle carnival, which also includes the Gr3 Spring Stakes for three-year olds on the the same day, while the Gr3 Newcastle Gold Cup takes place the following day on the Thursday.
The Cameron Handicap changed in distance from 1400 metres to 1300m in 2009 at the request of Racing NSW so the race was at a different distance to the Theo Marks Stakes (1400m) held the previous Saturday at Rosehill.

The Newcastle Cameron Handicap is the feature sprint race of the year for the Newcastle Jockey Club and generally fields for this race include above average local gallopers from the region or better types may make the trip up from Sydney to try and get a group race on their resume.
The handicap conditions can often make it an open race and winners and placegetters may go on to races like the Gr3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m) later in the Sydney carnival.
Osca Warrior (2004) won the Cameron Handicap & Bill Ritchie Hcp double, while Britt's Best (2nd in 2003) ran second in the Bill Ritchie Hcp, and Juggler (3rd in 1995) went on to run second in the Bill Ritchie Hcp.
The Cameron Handicap has been won recently by Raheeb (2008), not held in 2007 due to the equine flu outbreak, and Court's In Session in 2006.

2009 Newcastle Cameron Handicap: Absolutelyfabulous weaved through the field in the straight to produce a brlliant finish in last 50m to score in good style from Black Piranha, who was well back but came down the outside with a very strong run for second under his big weight, while McClintock finished a solid third after being wide early and hit the front at the 100m before being overtaken in the final stanza.
