The Matriarch Stakes is a Group 2 race for mares held at Flemington racecourse annually during the Melbourne spring racing carnival in November. The race is run over a distance of 2000 metres and worth $300,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Matriarch Stakes was won by Vintedge from Stole with Skyerush third.
The Matriarch Stakes is held on Emirates Stakes day which is the last day of the four day Flemington carnival and features two Group 1 races which are the Emirates Stakes and Patinack Farm Classic.
The Matriarch Stakes is a race for females only and attracts handy mares rather than the elite. The set weight & penalties conditions of the race favours the classier mares entered for the event and those mares with higher prizemoney and better strike rates are typically the ones to beat.
The race is not a great guide to anything in particular, and winners and placegetters may decide to go on to either the Gr2 Sandown Classic or Gr3 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown the following week if still racing after the Flemington carnival.
Vintedge (2011) ran second in a 1700m mares race on Melbourne Cup day at Flemington before scoring a top win in this event and recent Matriarch Stakes winners have been Well Rounded (2010) and Purple (2009).
