The Mackinnon Stakes is a Group 1 weight-for-age race held annually over a distance of 2000 metres at Flemington during the Melbourne Spring racing carnival. The race is widely recognised as an important final lead up race for any horse that is contesting the Melbourne Cup on the following Tuesday. It is worth $750,000 and was won in 2009 by Scenic Shot from Miss Maren with Viewed third.
The Mackinnon Stakes is held on the same day as the Victoria Derby which is the first day of the four day Flemington Spring racing carnival which is the last Saturday before the Melbourne Cup.
Derby day is one of the best days of racing anywhere in the world as every race is a group race and there are three more Group Ones along side the LKS Mackinnon Stakes, and they are the Victoria Derby, Coolmore Stud Stakes, and the Myer Classic.

The LKS Mackinnon Stakes was first run in 1869 and is one of the premier weight-for-age races of the Flemington spring racing carnival. The race is run over 2000 metres and has always attracted quality gallopers due to the distance, non-handicap conditions, and the timing of the race being three days before the 3200m Melbourne Cup.
In recent times the LKS Mackinnon Stakes has provided four Melbourne Cup winners and two Japan Cup winners.
Scenic Shot (2009) ran fifth in the WS Cox Plate prior to winning this race and in recent times the Mackinnon Stakes has been won by Thesio (2008), Sirmione (2007) and Desert War in 2006.

The LKS Mackinnon Stakes winner in 1986 was the classy Haye's trained At Talaq who went on to snare the Melbourne Cup in the same year, as did the quality mares Empire Rose (1998) and Let’s Elope (1991), while Rogan Josh (1999) also scored the Mackinnon Stakes & Melbourne Cup double.
The brilliant New Zealander Horlicks captured the Japan Cup after winning the Mackinnon in 1989, and champion galloper Better Loosen Up did the same thing in 1990.
The 2008 Melbourne Cup winner Viewed went into the Cup via this race.

2009 Mackinnon Stakes: Scenic Shot was beautifully ridden to go up to the leaders at the 150m and put a couple of lengths on them in quick fashion and then ran away to score a top win from Miss Maren who ran on well to get second place, while Zipping came from back in the field to finish strongly into third place.
