The JJ Liston Stakes is often contested by horses who have previously run in the weight-for-age Bletchingly Stakes two weeks earlier, as it is similar race conditions, except the Liston is run over an extra 200 metres. Shoot Out (2010) won the Bletchingly Stakes on his way to a fast finishing win in this event.
The Liston Stakes suits returning stars of the turf or a capable winter sprinter who is fit and in form, and many of the combatants might head on to the Gr2 Memsie Stakes (1400m) in a fortnight at the same track.
Being run in early August, the race does not always attract the topliners, as most of the top quality galloper are generally being primed for the major Caulfield & Flemington carnivals. The 2010 Liston Stakes seen a quality field contest the race, headed by Shocking, Heart of Dreams, Predatory Pricer and eventual winner Shoot Out.
The race itself has been won by some handy gallopers including Regal Roller (2004), Super Elegant (2003), Le Zagaletta (2001), while the talented Mahogany won in 1994 after winning the Victoria Derby the previous year.

Apache Cat (2007) went on to run second in the G2 Makybe Diva Stakes and then went on to take out a number of Group 1 races during the 2007 autumn racing carnival, while Regal Roller (2004) backed up two weeks later to take out the Gr2 Memsie Stakes.
The Liston is the perfect lead up to the weight-for-age Memsie Stakes which is run under the same conditions and identical distance. Whobegotyou (2nd in 2009) ran second in the Memsie Stakes after finishing runner-up in this event.
