Kingston Town Stakes Preview

The Kingston Town Stakes is a Group 3 quality handicap for 3yo & upwards horses and held each September during the Sydney spring racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 2000 metres and worth $125,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Kingston Town Stakes was won by Lamasery from Crafty Irna with Mourayan third.

The Kingston Town Stakes is held on the same day as the Group 1 Golden Rose over 1400m and Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes over 1300 metres.

The Kingston Town Stakes is a handicap event over 2000m that provides the ideal follow up race to the listed Premier's Cup held earlier in the previous month Rosehill.

Horses who run well in this race will more often than not head towards the Randwick carnival and races such as the Gr2 Colin Stephen Quality and Gr1 The Metropolitan, as they are a step up in distance and raced under simliar handicap conditons.

In recent years Herculian Prince (2010) went on to win The Metropolitan at Randwick, while Mr Martini (2006) and Stormhill (2005) both ran placings in the Premier's Cup before going on to win this race.

Railings (2nd in 2005) won the Colin Stephen Quality after finishing runner-up in this event and then went on to win the The Metropolitan and Gr1 Caulfield Cup.

This race is generally a reasonable guide to upcoming spring staying races during the Randwick carnival and tends to attract handy stayers rather than the upper echelon.

Lamasery (2011) ran fourth in a BM90 event over 1500m at Rosehill prior to winning this race second-up and recent Kingston Town Stakes winners include Herculian Prince (2010) and Ready To Lift (2009).
