The Karrakatta Plate is Western Australia's premier 2yo event being worth over half a million dollars in prizemoney and is one of the main feature races of the Perth autumn racing carnival in Western Australia.
Some good quality horses have won this race in the past, and those two-year-olds racing in this event may continue on to the Gr3 Sires Produce Stakes (1400m) in a fortnight. Motion Pictures (2010), Brava Fortune (2008) and Roman Time (2007) all won the Karrakatta Plate & Sires Produce Stakes double and a number of horses including Wolfe Dreams (2nd in 2009) have ran placings in both races over the past few years.
Winners of this race tend to be more than handy types, rather than top quality, and they don't typically go on to become elite stars of the turf. Occasionally an eastern states galloper might make their way over to Perth for the Karrakatta Plate due to the excellent prizemoney on offer.
Motion Pictures (2010) ran third in the listed Gimrack Stakes over 1100m before winning this event and recent winners of the Karrakatta Plate have been Gold Rocks (2009) and Brava Fortune (2008).

2010 Karrakatta Plate: Motion Pictures enjoyed the run of the race behind the leaders and when required in the straight he ran home doggedly to hit the lead inside the final 50m. Miss Gai Flyer (second) raced second all the way and ran to the front inside the 300m and looked the winner, before being run down by the eventual winner close to home. Absolute Pleasure battled gamely to hold on to third place.
