Hawkesbury Gold Cup

The Hawkesbury Gold Cup is a Group 3 open handicap race held during Melbourne Cup week on a Thursday each year in November at Hawkesbury racecourse in New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and worth $130,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Hawkesbury Gold Cup was won by Somepin Anypin from Willy Jimmy with Renewed Vitality third.

The Hawkesbury track is located about 65km west of the Sydney city centre, between Richmond and Windsor, and is directly opposite the Richmond Air Force Base. The Hawkesbury Gold Cup takes place on the same day as Gr1 Crown Oaks day in Melbourne.

The Hawkesbury Gold Cup is an average country cup race that normally attracts handy local types or horses that make the trip up from Sydney. Most of the quality gallopers are down south tackling the big money races on offer at the Flemington spring racing carnival in Melbourne and this race typically assembles fields of handy types rather than the elite.

Somepin Anypin (2011) won a 1400m race at Rosehill prior to leading all the way to win this event and recent Hawkesbury Gold Cup winners include Thankgodyou'rehere (2010) and Keepin' The Dream (2009).
