The Golden Rose is the richest race of the Sydney spring offering $1,000,000 in prizemoney for 3yo entrants. Being the only million dollar race of the Sydney carnival, the race is fast becoming the spring event to showcase up and coming three-year-olds who may have their eye on the upcoming spring carnivals in Sydney and Melbourne.

The best guide to this race has been the Gr3 Run to the Rose held earlier in the carnival in August at the same track and it has provided a great guide to winners and placegetters of this race in recent years.

Denman (2009) won the Run To The Rose & Golden Rose double in outstanding style as did Paratroopers (2005), while Mentality (3rd in 2006) won the Run to the Rose before finishing 3rd in this race. A number of gallopers have won or placed in both races and vice versa.

Races like the Gr3 Up and Coming Stakes for 3yo colts & geldings and Silver Shadow Stakes for three-year-old fillies held earlier in the carnival at Warwick Farm are also ideal lead up races to the Golden Rose.

Court Command (2006) won the Up and Coming Stakes and Duporth (2008) ran third in the Up and Coming Stakes before winning this race, so it will pay to cast a keen eye over recent 3yo set weight events if history is any guide.

Some 3yo gallopers contesting this race might also go on to a race like the Gr3 Newcastle Spring Stakes the following month and Ilovethiscity (3rd in 2009) went on to score a strong win in the Spring Stakes after running third in this event.

Manawanui (2011) won the Up And Coming Stakes over 1300m at Warwick Farm on his way to success in this event and recent Golden Rose winners have been Toorak Toff (2010) and Denman (2009).
