Gloaming Stakes Preview

The Gloaming Stakes is a Group 3 set weights event for three-year-olds held each year in September at Rosehill racecourse in Sydney. The race is run over a distance of 1800 metres and worth over $250,000 in prizemoney.

The 2009 Gloaming Stakes was won by So You Think from Gathering with Heraklion third.

The Gloaming Stakes is a good race for three-year-olds and it attracts staying type horses who generally head on to the Gr1 Spring Champion Stakes over 2000m in a fortnight at Randwick. The race is usually taken out by a more than handy type and some good horses to win the race include Arena (1998), Tie the Knot (1997), and Brave Warrior in 1994.

In recent years the Gloaming Stakes has proven a good guide to some of the better staying races in Sydney and Melbourne during the Spring Carnival. So You Think (2009) went on score a wonderful victory in the time honoured WS Cox Plate as a three-year-old in Melbourne later in the spring.

All Black Gold (2006) went on to run 2nd in the Spring Champion Stakes and Tuesday Joy (2nd in 2006) went to Flemington in the Melbourne spring and won the Gr2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m), before running a top second in the Gr1 Crown Oaks (2500m).

Pendragon (2005) ran third in the Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) before winning this event. He then went on to run second in the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) in Sydney, before winning the Gr 2 Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) on Caulfield Cup day in Melbourne.

Duelled (3rd in 2005) went on to run 3rd in the Spring Champion Stakes before taking out the Gr2 AAMI Vase (2040m) at Moonee Valley in Melbourne and then ran a top second placing to Benfico in the Gr1 Victoria Derby (2500m).
