George Main Stakes

The George Main Stakes is the premier weight-for-age race of the Sydney spring racing carnival and is held each year in September at Randwick racecourse in Sydney. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and worth $350,000 in prizemoney. The 2012 George Main Stakes was won by Shoot Out from Rangirangdoo with Secret Admirer third.

Six group races are held on George Main Stakes Day including the Gr2 The Shorts for sprinters and the Gr3 Gloaming Stakes for three-year-olds. The winner of this race is exempt from a ballot on the Gr1 Epsom Handicap.

This 2011 George Main Stakes was held at Rosehill racecourse over 1500m as the Randwick track was out of action for this meeting during the 2011/2012 racing season.

The George Main Stakes is a quality race for good horses and the weight-for-age conditions of the race over the 1600m (one mile) distance attracts top class milers and solid 2000m horses, to make this an exciting race over the Sydney spring racing carnival.

The George Main Stakes has stood the test of time as a classic spring race in Sydney and has been won by some quality gallopers over the years including More Joyous (2010), Racing To Win (2006), Grand Armee (2004), Lonhro (2003), Defier (2002) and champion galloper Kingston Town (1981-82) in consecutive years.

Horses contesting this race quite often head on to the Epsom Handicap over 1600m on the final day of the carnival at the same track and Trusting (2nd in 2010) went on to finish runner-up in the Epsom after running second in this race.

Shoot Out (2012) finished runner-up in the Gr1 Doncaster Handicap over the same trip in the autumn before returning from a spell to win this event and recent George Main Stakes winners include Sincero (2011) and More Joyous (2010).
