The George Main Stakes is the premier weight-for-age event of the Sydney spring racing carnival and held each year in late September at Randwick racecourse. The race is a Group 1 event worth $300,000 in prizemoney and run over a distance of 1600 metres.
The 2009 George Main Stakes was was taken out by Road to Rock from Black Piranha with Onemorenomore third.
The winner of this race is exempt from a
ballot on the Epsom Handicap.

The George Main Stakes is a quality race for good horses and the weight-for-age conditions of the race over the 1600m (one mile) attracts top class milers and solid 2000m horses to make this an exciting race over the Sydney spring carnival.
The George Main Stakes has stood the test of time as a classic spring race in Sydney and has been won by some quality gallopers, including Grand Armee (2004), Lonhro (2003), Defier (2002), Encounter (1997), Shaftesbury Avenue (1990) and the champion galloper Kingston Town in consecutive years 1981-82.
Horses contesting this race may head on to the Gr1 Epsom Handicap the following week at the same track. Rock Kingdom (6th in 2009) went on to win the Epsom, while Road To Rock (2009) finished third in the Epsom one week later.
Recent winners of the George Main Stakes include Mentality (2008), not run in 2007, and Racing To Win in 2006.

2009 George Main Stakes: Road To Rock got home strongly on the back of a very fast pace set by early leader Court Command and proved too strong in the run to the line from Black Piranha who came from back in the field to hit the lead at the 200m before being run down by the eventual winner. Onemorenomore got to the lead momentarily in the straight before being overtaken and finishing a sound third.
