The Flight Stakes is a Group 1 set weights race for three-year-old fillies held at Randwick racecourse during the Sydney spring racing carnival each year in October. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and worth $400,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Flight Stakes was won by Streama from Hallowell Belle with Dowager Queen third.
The Flight Stakes is the only Group One race for 3yo fillies held during the Sydney spring carnival and it attracts some of the best young females looking for elite race glory. The Gr2 Furious Stakes or Gr2 Tea Rose Stakes are traditional guides to this race, especially the Tea Rose, where winners or placegetters have provided more than 75% of Flight Stakes winners over recent years.
More Joyous (2009), Samantha Miss (2008), Cheeky Choice (2006), Ha Ha (2001) and Unworldy (2000) won the Tea Rose & Flight Stakes double while Fashions Afield (2005) and Unearthly (2003) both ran placings in the Tea Rose Stakes before winning this race.
A number of fillies have won ran placings in both the Tea Rose Stakes and Flight Stakes and the Tea Rose form holds up extremely well for this race.
Streama (2011), Samantha Miss (2008), Unworldly (2000), Danglissa (1999), Sunline (1998) all managed to win the Furious Stakes-Tea Rose Stakes- Flight Stakes treble while Samantha Miss (2008) and Angst (1993) are the only two gallopers to win the Priincess Series of races, Silver Shadow, Furious Stakes, Tea Rose Stakes and Flight Stakes.
Some top fillies have been successful in this event and none better than the mighty Sunline (1998), while other good winners have been More Joyous (2009), Samantha Miss (2008), Assertive Lass (1996), Angst (1993), Triscay (1990), Research (1988) and Bounding Away (1986).
Streama (2011) won the Tea Rose Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill prior to scoring the easiest of wins in this event.
