The Ethereal Stakes is a Group 3 set weights & penalties race that takes place each year at Caulfield racecourse in October during the Melbourne spring racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 2000 metres and worth $200,000 in prize money. The 2019 Ethereal Stakes was won by Gamay from Vegas Jewel with Celestial Falls third.
Held on Caulfield Cup Day, on the final day of the Melbourne Racing Club's three-day spring carnival, the Ethereal Stakes features alongside the Group 1 Caulfield Cup, Group 2 Caulfield Sprint and Group 3 Caulfield Classic.

The Ethereal Stakes is a three-year-old fillies race that provides the perfect lead up to the longer feature races to come for females during the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington.
Races such as the Gr2 Wakeful Stakes over 2000m and Group 1 VRC Oaks over 2500m at Flemington will be on the radar of any capable fillies running around in this race and Set Square (2015) was the last filly to claim the Ethereal Stakes & VRC Oaks double.
Gamay (2019) ran second behind Celestial Falls in a 3YO Fillies race over 1800m at Flemington before finding plenty to score a gutsy win for the Archie Alexander stable in Ballarat.
Recent Ethereal Stakes winners include Verry Elleegant (2018) and Pinot (2017).
Spring Carnival Guide
Aristia (2nd in 2018) went on to win the Gr2 Wakeful Stakes on Derby Day at Flemington on the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Tiamo Grace (2nd in 2016) and Sebring (5th in 2016) finished first & second in the Wakeful Stakes.
Set Square (2014) headed to Flemington to score a good win in the VRC Oaks, while Solicit (2nd in 2013) finished runner-up in the Wakeful Stakes and third in the VRC Oaks. She returned the following autumn to win the Gr3 The Vanity Stakes.
Alzora (2012) who also won the Vanity Stakes in the autumn after taking out the Ethereal Stakes in the spring, while Summerbliss (3rd in 2012) ran third in the VRC Oaks.
Dowager Queen (2nd in 2011) managed to run third in the Wakeful Stakes and second in the VRC Oaks following her second placing in the Ethereal Stakes.
