The David Jones Cup (formerly Coongy Hcp) is a Group 3 open handicap race that is run over a distance of 2000 metres each October at Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne. The race takes place on the same day as the major race of the Caulfield carnival, the Gr1 Caulfield Cup. It is worth $125,000 and was taken out in 2009 for the second consecutive year by Baughurst from Shocking with Pacino third.

The David Jones Cup is a middle distance race for open horses and attracts handy milers and middle distance horses who are stepping up in distance towards the longer races to come during the spring carnival.
The race was formerly known as the Coongy Handicap and was held on the previous Wednesday, which made it a good lead up race to the MRC's major staying race, the Caulfield Cup, but now takes place on the same day as the Cup.
The race has been won in recent years by Fire in the Night (2007), Maybe Better (2006), and Activation in 2005.

Spring Carnival Guide
Baughurst (2008-09) went on to run placings in both the 2008 Moonee Valley Cup and 2008 Queen Elizabeth Stakes later in the spring carnival.
Fire in the Night (2007) ran 3rd in the listed HKJC Plate on Melbourne Cup day of the same year, while Maybe Better (2006) went on to win the Gr3 Saab Quality on Derby day before running 3rd in that years Melbourne Cup.
Shocking (2009) went on to score a big win in the the Saab Quality on Derby day before winning the Melbourne Cup the following Tuesday.

2009 David Jones Cup: Baughurst enjoyed a cosy run midfield before making ground around the turn and getting to the lead inside the 200m and won in good style. Shocking cam from back in the field to run on well and get second, while Pacino raced on the pace and got to the lead momentarily in the straight and fought on valiantly to hold on for third.
