The Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes is a Group 2 race run under weight-for-age conditions each September at Moonee Valley racecourse during the Melbourne spring racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and worth $300,000 in prizemoney. The 2012 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes was won by Happy Trails from Green Moon with Rekindled Interest third.
From 1984 to 2004 the race was known as the ‘John F. Feehan Stakes’, and from 2005 onwards, the race has been run as the ‘Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes’. The Gr2 WH Stocks Stakes and Gr3 McEwen Stakes are held on the same day.
The Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes takes place at the tight Moonee Valley race track over 1600 metres early in the spring and generally attracts quality milers and often some top class horses on the way to bigger and better things. The race has grown in stature in recent times and many of our best horses now compete in this race and have then gone on to victory in some of our biggest feature races of the spring.
The Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes has been a great guide to spring feature races over the past few years, with winners and placegetters providing Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup winners and a high percentage of WS Cox Plate winners.
Three-time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva (2nd in 2004-2005) was twice a runner-up in this event on her way to her last two Cup wins, while dual Cox Plate winners Fields Of Omagh (2002), Northerly (2001) and Sunline (2000) were all winners of this race.
Other classy horses to win the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes include Whobegotyou (2009-2010), El Segundo (2007) and Better Loosen Up (1990), and the race is generally taken out by a quality galloper who may go on to bigger and better things during the spring.
Happy Trails (2012) finished runner-up in the Gr2 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield prior to winning this event and recent Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winners include Rekindled Interest (2011) and Whobegotyou (2009-10).
Spring Carnival Guide
Green Moon (2012) claimed the Gr1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington after taking out this race
Rekindled Interest (2011) went on to run third in both the WS Cox Plate at Moonee Valley and Gr1 Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington after winning this race, before returning to run third in this race the following year.
Valley specialist Whobegotyou (2009-10, 3rd in 2011) twice won this race before finishing third in his hat-trick attempt. He went on to win races such as the Gr1 Underwood Stakes and Gr1 Caulfield Stakes during a wonderful career, which also included a third placing in the 2012 WS Cox Plate.
Mic Mac (2nd in 2009) ran second in the Gr2 Schweppes Stakes on Cox Plate day later in the spring while El Segundo (2007) managed to win WS Cox Plate later that same spring.
The Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes has been a pivotal race of the spring in the past few years and it may pay to keep a close eye on horses who perform well in this year's event.
