The Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes is a Group 2 race run under weight-for-age conditions each September at Moonee Valley racecourse during the Melbourne spring racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and worth $300,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes was won by Rekindled Interest from Alcopop with Whobegotyou third.
From 1984 to 2004 the race was known as the ‘John F. Feehan Stakes’ and from 2005 onwards the race has been run as the ‘Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes’.
The Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes takes place at the tight Moonee Valley race track over 1600 metres early in the spring and generally attracts quality milers and often some top class horses on the way to bigger and better things. The race has grown in stature in recent times and many of our best horses now compete in this race and have then gone on to victory in some of our biggest feature races of the spring.
The Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes has been a great guide to spring feature races over the past few years with winners and placegetters providing Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup winners and a high percentage of WS Cox Plate winners.
The race has been won by many of Australia's best gallopers including El Segundo (2007), Fields Of Omagh (2002), Northerly (2001), mighty mare Sunline (2000), Better Loosen Up (1990) and takes place on the same day as the Gr2 WH Stocks Stakes and Gr3 McEwen Stakes.
Rekindled Interest (2011) ran fourth in the Gr2 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield prior to winning this event and recent Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes winners include Whobegotyou (2009-10) and Guillotine (2008).
Spring Carnival Guide Whobegotyou (2009) went on to run second in the Gr1 Underwood Stakes before scoring a top win in the Gr1 Yalumba Stakes and he came back the following year to win this race for the second year in a row, before going on to run placings in the Yalumba Stakes and WS Cox Plate later that spring.
Mic Mac (2nd in 2009) ran second in the Gr2 Schweppes Stakes on Cox Plate day later in the spring while El Segundo (2007) managed to win WS Cox Plate later that same spring.
Lad of the Manor (2005-06) won the 2005 Mackinnon Stakes and champion mare Makybe Diva (2nd in 2004-05) won the 2005 WS Cox Plate before going on to greatness winning three Melbourne Cups from 2003 through 2005.
Fields Of Omagh (2002) won the 2003 and 2006 WS Cox Plate and Northerly (2001) won the 2001-02 WS Cox Plate double and 2002 Caulfield Cup. The brilliant mare Sunline (2000) won this race between winning the 1999-2000 WS Cox Plate double.
The Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes has been a pivotal race of the spring in the past few years and it may pay to keep a close eye on horses who perform well in this year's event.
