The Crown Oaks is Melbourne's premier blue ribbon event for three-year-old staying fillies during the Flemington four day spring racing carnival in Melbourne. It's the fillies equivalent of the Victoria Derby for colts & geldings and run over the same 2500 metres distance as the Derby. The race is restricted to fillies at set weights and was won in 2009 by the Bart Cumming's trained filly Faint Perfume from Valdemoro with Savsbelle third.

Prizemoney for Crown Oaks is $1,000,000, plus trophies valued at $5,000, and is one of the richest races for fillies in Australia. The Wakeful Stakes run over 2000 metres on Victoria Derby day is the traditional lead up to the Crown Oaks.

The Crown Oaks is held on the third day of the Flemington four day racing carnival and is always run on the Thursday, two days after the Melbourne Cup.

Crown Oaks info
Date: Thursday November 4th, 2010
Track: Flemington racecourse, Melbourne
Distance: 2500 metres
Race Type: 3yo Fillies Set Weights
Status: Group 1
Prizemoney: $1,000,000
2009 Winner: Faint Perfume
2009 Crowd: 80,112

The Crown Oaks day itself is known as 'Ladie's Day' and there is almost as much action off the track as there is on it, with the annual holding of the 'Fashions on the Field", which ensures a huge crowd is always in attendance.

Make sure you take a keen interest in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes run at Flemington on Derby Day, as the Wakeful winner will more often than not win or run a place in the Crown Oaks.

The Crown Oaks has produced some quality winners with Samantha Miss (2008) winning the Princess Series during the Sydney spring carnival prior to a WS Cox Plate placing, before her Oaks success. Other notable winners in past years have been Magical Miss (2001), Special Harmony (2003) and Miss Finland in 2006.

The race is generally won by the classiest filly as the 2500 metres finds out the weaker fillies and class generally prevails in the run to the line.

Spring Carnival Guide
The Wakeful Stakes on Derby day has proven a great form guide for this race with the Wakeful providing 10 Crown Oaks winners, 3 seconds, and 2 thirds in the past twenty years.

The most recent fillies to complete the Wakeful Stakes/Crown Oaks double have been Faint Perfume (2009), Serenade Rose (2005) and Hollow Bullet (2004), while Tuesday Joy(2006) and Timbourina (2003) both finished second in the Wakeful and then went on to win the Oaks.

Faint Perfume (2009) ran third in the Gr1 Thousand Guineas and then won the Wakeful Stakes on her way to winning this race and in recent times the Crown Oaks has been won by Samantha Miss (2008), Arapaho Miss (2007) and Miss Finland in 2006.

2009 Crown Oaks: Faint Perfume bided her time at the back of the field before coming down the middle of the track in the straight to prove the superior stayer from a gallant Valdemoro who fought it out strongly to finish less than a length from the winner, while Savsbelle battled on fairly 4.5L back to gain third place.
