The Craven Plate is the last weight-for-age race of the spring carnival and it is a 2000m event that takes place on Epsom Handicap day. The race suits horses who are not contesting the Gr1 Epsom Hcp (1600m) or the Gr1 The Metropolitan (2400m) on the same day.
The race has been won in the past by some nice staying types including Mummify (2005), Yippio (2000 & 1997), Tie the Knot (1999) and Sharscay in 1998.
Horses contesting this race may have previously tackled races like the Gr2 Hill Stakes two weeks prior at Rosehill or the Gr1 George Main Stakes (1600m) held one week earlier at Randwick.
Miss Marielle (2009) won the Hill Stakes on her way to scoring in this event and in recent times the Craven Plate has been won by Lorne Dancer (2008) and Cateclipse (2006). the race was not run in 2007 due to the swine flu outbreak in Sydney at the time.

2009 Craven Plate: Miss Marielle sat on the pace before surging to the lead in the straight and finding plenty in the run to the line and defying all challengers. Nom Du Jeu raced midifield before making a sustained run in the straight to finish second while Fulmonti ran on fairly to get third place.
