The Cranbourne Cup is an above average country cup with good prizemoney and is one of the bigger country cups on the racing calendar each year.
The race tends to attract handy types most of the time, although in recent years it has produced a Melbourne Cup placegetter with On a Jeune (2004) finishing second in the 2005 Melbourne Cup and Barbaricus (2nd in 2008) running a very good third in the Caulfield Cup less than a week later.
Boom 'N' Zoom (2011) finished seventh in the Bairnsdale Cup over 1800m prior to winning this event and recent Cranbourne Cup winners include Starmon (2010) and Sermon (2009).
Spring Carnival Guide
The race is not a very good guide to the major staying races in Melbourne during the spring carnival and the winner is usually just a handy stayer who is competitive in the city and stronger than the country class horses who normally contest this race.
However, On a Jeune (2004) managed to run second in the Melbourne Cup the following year in 2005. Barbaricus (2nd in 2008) ran third next start in the Gr1 Caulfield Cup(2400m) before running second in the Gr1 Mackinnon Stakes over 2000m on Derby Day.
