The Cockram Stakes is a mares only race over the sprint journey of 1200m that often attracts more than handy females who may or may not go on to better races ahead during the Melbourne spring racing carnival.
The classier mares engaged will be advantaged by the set weights conditions of the race and competitors in this event may go on to tackle similar type mares races like the Gr2 Lets Elope Stakes at Flemington on Makybe Diva Stakes Day or the Gr3 How Now Stakes at Caulfield on Underwood Stakes Day later in the carnival.
Response (2nd in 2010) went on to run second in the Lets Elope Stakes after finishing runner-up in this event and she then stepped up another level to win the Gr1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield. Lady Lynette (3rd in 2010) ran third in the Gr2 WH Stocks Stakes at Moonee Valley before winning the Gr3 Inglis Mile on Cox Plate Day at the same track.
Cats Whisker (2009) went on to run second in the Lets Elope Stakes before winning the WH Stocks Stakes and Gr2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes later in the spring.
Mid Summer Music (2011) won the Gr3 Bletchingly Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield prior to winning this race and recent winners of the Cockram Stakes have been Rhythm In Paris (2010) and Cats Whisker (2009).
