The Cockram Stakes is a mares only race over the sprint journey of 1200m and often attracts more than handy females on their way to better things. The classier mares engaged will be advantaged by the set weights conditions of the race and competitors in this event may go on to tackle races like the Gr3 Lets Elope Stakes (1400m) or the Gr3 How Now Stakes (1200m) which are raced under similar conditions later in the carnival.
Cats Whisker (2009) went on to run second in the Gr2 Lets Elope Stakes before winning the Gr2 WH Stocks Stakes and Gr2 Rose Of Kingston Stakes later in the spring.
The race has been taken out in recent years by Princess Gisella (2008), Storm Signal (2007) and Storm Alert in 2006.
