The Chelmsford Stakes is a Group 2 weight-for-age race held each September at Randwick racecourse in Sydney during the Sydney spring racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and is worth $175,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Chelmsford Stakes was won by Trusting from My Kingdom Of Fife with Strike The Stars third.
The Chelmsford Stakes is a the first weight-for-age race over a mile in the new racing season in Sydney and the Gr2 Warwick Stakes held earlier in the month at Warwick Farm is generally the best lead up race to this event, as it is similar conditions but 200 metres less.
Generally attracting above average gallopers, the Chelmsford Stakes is considered a good lead up race to the Gr1 George Main Stakes over 1600 metres on the the first day of the Randwick carnival and is a more than handy race for this time of year.
A race such as the Gr2 Hill Stakes over 2000m at Randwick could also be on the agenda for horses contesting this race and Trusting (2011) went on to win the Hill Stakes after scoring in this event.
Trusting (2011) ran fifth in the Warwick Stakes when resuming from a spell before winning this race second-up and recent Chelmsford Stakes winners have been Theseo (2010) and O'Lonhro (2009).
