The Chatham Stakes is a Group 3 open handicap race held at Flemington racecourse annually during the Melbourne spring carnival in late October or early November. It is run over 1400 metres and has previously been known as the 'Ellerston Capital Stakes', 'Yallambee Stud Stakes', 'HKJC plate', and 'Great Western'.
Worth over $250,000 in prizemoney the 2009 Chatham Stakes was won by the David Payne trained Centennial Park who defeated McClintock with a dead-heat for third between Royal Ida and Sniper's Bullet.
The race was ran as the 'The Lexus Stakes' in 2009.
The Chatham Stakes is held on Derby day which is the first day of the four day Flemington spring racing carnival. Derby day features four Group 1 races, the AAMI Victoria Derby, Coolmore Stud Stakes, Mackinnon Stakes, and Myer Classic.

The Chatham Stakes is generally a race for handy horses who are better than average but not top class gallopers. Horses contesting this race might consider going on and tackle the Gr1 Emirates Classic on the final saturday of the carnival or the Gr3 Sandown Stakes later in the spring.
In recent years the race has been taken out by All Silent (2008), Count To Zero (2007) and Malcolm in 2006.

Scenic Peak (2001 & 2003) won the Emirates Stakes in 2002, while Bezeal Bay (1998) went on to win the Emirates Stakes the same year. Valedictum (3rd in 2005) won the Emirates the same year before finishing 3rd the following year in 2006, while All Silent (2008) managed to win the Chatham Stakes/Emirates Stakes double in the same year.

2009 Chatham Stakes: Centennial Park aided by a great ride negotiated a passage through the field to finish fast and just grab McClintock on the line. Early leader McClintock was in front all the way down the straight and fought off all challengers until nailed close to home. Royal ida and Sniper's Bullet both worked home well and dead-heated for third.
