Carbine Club Stakes

The Carbine Club Stakes is a Group 3 race for three-year-olds held at Flemington racecourse annually during the Melbourne spring racing carnival in late October or early November. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and worth $250,000 in prizemoney. The 2012 Carbine Club Stakes was won by Lunar Rise from Tatra with Proverb third.

The Carbine Club Stakes is held on Derby day, which is the first day of the four day Melbourne Cup Carnival and features alongside four quality Group 1 races including the AAMI Victoria Derby, Coolmore Stud Stakes, Mackinnon Stakes and Myer Classic.

The Carbine Club Stakes is a mile event for three-year-old gallopers that can herald the onset of a topliner such as Saintly (1995), who announced himself to the racing world with a spectacular victory, but more often than not it simply attracts handy types who may go on to races like the Gr2 Sandown Guineas later in the spring.

Three-year-olds who are strong at the end of 1400m or have performed well over 1600m are suited to this event and the Carbine Club Stakes usually kicks off proceedings on Derby Day to set the Melbourne Cup four-day carnival into action.

Lunar Rise (2012) ran 4th in the Gr1 Spring Champion Stakes over 2000m at Randwick prior to winning this event and recent Carbine Club Stakes winners include Galah (2011) and Mr Chard (2010).

Spring Carnival Guide
Winners of this race may go on to taste success in the Gr2 Sandown Guineas as Kidnapped (2009), Over (1999), Voting (1993) and Shankhill Lass (1995) all managed to do. Kidnapped also went on to win the Gr1 SA Derby in the autumn of 2010.

Galah (2011) finished third in the Sandown Guineas after winning this race.

Schilling (2nd in 2007) went on to win the Sandown Guineas after finishing second in this race, while Caymans (4th 2008) won the Sandown Guineas and Lucky Thunder (2nd 2008) ran third in the same race.
