The Belmont Sprint is an open handicap over 1400m and is one of only three group races held at Belmont each year, with the others being the Gr3 Sires Produce Stakes and Gr3 Roma Cup which are held in May.
The Belmont Sprint usually attracts those horses who previously contested the Roma Cup which is run under the same conditions, but 200m less, and usually the race will assemble the best available local sprinters going around.
Modem (2004) and Tribula (2003) have won the Roma Cup & Belmont Sprint double in recent years, while multiple horses have run places in both races or placed in the Roma Cup and gone on to win this race or vice versa.
Grand Nirvana (2010) ran third in the Roma Cup on his way to winnthis race and recent Belmont Sprint winners have been Universal Ruler (2009) and Marasco (2008).
