The AJ Scahill Stakes is a Group 3 weight-for-age race held annually each December at Ascot racecourse in Perth, Western Australia during the Perth summer racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1400 metres and worth $125,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 AJ Scahill Stakes was won by Grand Nirvana from Waratah's Secret with Grey Monarch third.
Held on the same day as the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic over 1800 metres, the AJ Scahill Stakes is the last weight-for-age sprint event of the summer carnival.
The AJ Scahill Stakes is raced under weight-for-age conditions and suits those horses who may have previously contested races like the Gr2 Lee Steere Stakes or Gr2 Winterbottom Stakes that are raced under the same level weight conditions. The Gr2 RJ Peters Stakes is another possible lead up race for horses considering tackling this event.
Tarzi (2007) ran second in the Lee Steere Stakes then ran unplaced in the Railway Stakes before winning this race that year, while Takeover Target (2008) won the Winterbottom Stakes before scoring in this event.
Any gallopers who contested the earlier weight-for-age sprint races during the carnival will consider lining up in this race and any of them who have performed well under weight-for-age conditions previously can be relied upon to do much the same again.
Grand Nirvana (2011) ran third in the Winterbottom Stakes on his way to winning this race and recent AJ Scahill winners include Waratah's Secret (2010) and Proart (2009).
