The AJ Scahill Stakes is the last weight-for-age sprint event of the summer carnival and horses who have previously contested the Gr2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m WFA) and Gr2 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m WFA) may go on to run in this race. The Gr2 RJ Peters Stakes (1500m) is another possible lead up race for horses considering this event.
Tarzi (2007) ran second in the Lee Steere Stakes then ran unplaced in the Railway Stakes before winning this race that year. 2008 winner Takeover Target won the Winterbottom Stakes before scoring in this event.
Recent winners include Takeover Target (2008), Tarzi (2007) and Marasco in 2006.

2009 AJ Scahill Stakes: Proart sat fourth on the outside and received a lovely run and then made his move entering the straight to bound away and kick clear and go on very a very good win. Tarzi came from midfield on the turn to run on for second without ever looking likely to win, while Elliotto was on the pace all the way and battled on well to hold down third place.
