The AAMI Victoria Derby is a prestigious event for three-year-old gallopers and over the years has predominantly been won by males, with the last female to win the race being Frances Tressady in 1923.
Derby day is also a huge event on the social calendar with Flemington racecourse the place to be on Derby day where crowds have topped 115,000 people for the last four years, with a record crowd of 129,089 in 2006 which makes Derby Day the most popular day crowd wise in recent times for the four day Flemington carnival.
The traditional lead up race to the Derby is the AAMI Vase run over 2040 metres at Moonee Valley on WS Cox Plate day the previous weekend. The Group 2 AAMI Vase is a strong guide to the Derby as a high number of winners have come via the Moonee Valley middle distance race.
The Victoria Derby has been won in recent years by Rebel Raider (2008), Kibbutz (2007) and Efficient in 2006.

Spring Carnival Guide
The VRC AAMI Victoria Derby is one of the oldest classic events in Australia being first run in 1855 and many Derby winners and placegetters have gone on to become quality horses and winners of a number of big races of the Australian turf.
The brilliant Dulcify (1978) and Red Anchor (1984) both went on to win the WS Cox Plate after winning the Derby. Nothin' Leica Dane (1995) backed up the following Tuesday to run a top second in the Melbourne Cup, while Elvstroem(2003) took out the 2004 Caulfield Cup in great fashion.
The 2006 winner Efficient went on to win the 2007 Melbourne Cup in brilliant style, and in doing so, became the first horse since Phar Lap in 1930 to win the Melbourne Cup the year after winning the Derby.
