The VRC Sires Produce Stakes is a classic event for two-year-olds that gives young horses their first test at greater than 1200m in a group race in the autumn and horses who have previously contested the Gr1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield a couple of weeks earlier are best suited to tackle this event.

The race suits horses who run on strongly in the Blue Diamond which indicates the extra distance of this race may be of benefit. It is a race that is more often than not won by an above average galloper.

The Sydney autumn carnival can often be on the agenda for 2yo gallopers in this event and Rostova (2009) went to Sydney and ran down the track in the Gr1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) , while Von Costa De Hero (2008) managed to run second in the Slipper after winning this race.

2010 VRC Sires produce Stakes: Shamrocker was wide all the way and just kept coming in the straight to be too strong in the run home to score a gutsy win. Willow Creek raced on the pace and ran to the lead inside the 300m mark before being overtaken by the eventual winner, while Yosei ran home fairly along the inside rail to just grab third from the fast finishing Backgammon.
