The Victoria Handicap is a Group 3 open handicap race held each year in April on Easter Saturday at Caulfield racecourse in Melbourne. The race is run over a distance of 1400 metres and has prizemoney of $125,000. The 2011 Victoria Handicap was won by Red Colossus from Budriguez with Time Matters third.
The Gr3 Easter Cup takes place on the same day as the Victoria Handicap and they are the only two group races during this period in Melbourne.
The Victoria Handicap is the prominent sprint event held at Easter time in Melbourne and more often than not attracts above average gallopers, rather than the upper echelon, as most of the quality gallopers will be in Sydney at this time of year for the big money events on offer.
The race usually assembles a capacity field of gallopers with varying ability, sometimes making it a tough job for punters when trying to find a winner. It has carved its own niche on the racing calendar and is reasonable quality race for the easter period in Melbourne.
Red Colossus (2011) was having his first start since the 2010 Ballarat Cup when he produced a strong finish to win this event and recent Victoria Handicap winners include Orbit Express (2010) and Masked Assassin (2009).
