The BMW is a Group 1 weight-for-age race held annually each April at Rosehill racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. during the autumn racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 2400 metres and worth $2,250,000 in prizemoney. The 2010 The BMW was won by Littorio from Zavite with No Wine No Song third.
The BMW was previously known as the 'H E Tancred Stakes' and takes place on Golden Slipper Day which is one of the biggest days racing anywhere in the world, with four other Group 1 races on the card, including Golden Slipper Stakes, Vinery Stud Stakes, George Ryder Stakes, and the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

The BMW is the premier distance race of the Sydney autumn carnival and the assembled field is generally of high quality, with New Zealand horses often making their presence felt. The race is run over 2400m at weight-for-age and has grown into one of the most anticipated races on the Australian racing calendar each year in Sydney.
The BMW is a staying event that takes place on the same day as Rosehill's biggest race, the Gr1 Golden Slipper, and provides quite a contrast to the dash for cash that is the Slipper.
In recent times the Gr1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m WFA) has been a reasonable guide to this race, with Tuesday Joy (2008), Eremein (2006) and Tie The Knot (2000) all winning the Ranvet Stakes & BMW double in the same year.
Many classy gallopers have won this race including outstanding mare Makybe Diva (2005), Ethereal (2002), Tie The Knot (1999-2000), Might And Power (1998), Octagonal (1996-97) and New Zealander Our Poetic Prince in 1989.
Littorio (2010) ran unplaced in the Ranvet Stakes prior to proving the superior stayer in this event on a slow track and recent winners of the BMW have been Fiumicino (2009) and Tuesday Joy (2008).

2010 The BMW: Littorio came with a well timed run in the straight to grab the leading bunch inside the 100m and proved the best stayer on the day. Zavite raced on the pace and surged to the lead in the straight before running a gallanat second, while No Wine No Song was always handy and battled on well to grab third spot.
