The Spring Stakes is a Group 3 weight-for-age race that takes place annually each August at Morphettville racecourse in Adelaide, South Australia. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres and worth $115,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Spring Stakes was won by Uxorious from Periduki with Valentine Miss third.
The Spring Stakes is the first group race of the new racing season in Adelaide and being run at weight-for-age typically attracts the best available local horses suited to the conditions of the race. Horses from interstate may also make the trek to Adelaide in the hope of picking up a group race to add to their resume.
It's the only group race offered in Adelaide for the second half of the calendar year and the level weights conditions provide a decided advantage for the better gallopers. The race is run under the same conditions as the Gr3 RN irwin Stakes in March, but the Spring Stakes is an extra 100m in distance.
Some more than handy gallopers have saluted in this event over the years, including Super Elegant (2005), Flavour (2001),
Will Fly (1998),
Hero Wind (1994-95 & 1997) and brlliant sprinter Redelva in three consecutive years from 1988 to 1990.
Uxurious (2011) ran sixth in the listed Monash Stakes over 1100m at Caufield prior to winning this event and recent Spring Stakes winners include Rebel Raider (2010) and Midnight Mustang (2009).
