The Southern Cross Stakes is a Group 3 Quality Handicap race held annually each February at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres and is worth $125,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 Southern Cross Stakes was won by Sister Madly from Pinwheel with Cardinal Virtue third.
The race has traditionally been known as the 'Frederick Clissold Stakes' and changed names in 2009 to become the 'Southern Cross Stakes' and takes place on the same day as the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes.

The Southern Cross Stakes is a quality handicap event that tends to attract above average sprinting types rather than the topliners as recent history shows. Occasionally a high quality type may tackle this race and top class gallopers Danewin (1996) and Joanne (1991) have both won this event.
The natural progression for sprinters contesting this race is the Gr3 Liverpool City Cup at Warwick Farm on Gr1 Chipping Norton Stakes day in March, as it is raced under similar conditions but rises an extra 100 metres in distance. Dreamscape (2nd in 2010) went on to win the Liverpool City Cup after finishing second in this event.
Sister Madly (2011) was resmuing from a spell when she scored an easy win in this event and recent Southern Cross Stakes winners include Kenny's World (2010) and Marchinski (2009).
