The South Pacific Classic is a handy little group race for three-year-olds who did not travel down the Derby or Oaks road and prefer to race over shorter sprinting distances. It is a 1400m event and the set weight & penalty conditions lends itself to the better three-year-olds to contest the race.
It is a race for more than handy three-year-olds rather than the elite and typically attracts above average gallopers each year. Royal Discretion (2008) travelled to Melbourne later that spring and won the Gr3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) in good style on Caulfield Cup day.
Star Of Octagonal (2010) ran second in a 1200m race at Rosehill prioer to winning this race and recent winners of the South Pacific Classic has been Fravashi (2009) and Royal Discretion (2008).

2010 South Pacific Classic: Star Of Octagonal settled on the pace, and held that position into the straight, before making his run around the 300m when he ran past race leader (Neeson) and really stretched out to the line for a very good win. Neeson led them up and fought on very strongly in the final stanza, to grab second from the fast finishing All Legal, who was back worse than midfield on the turn before making ground along the rails to grab third.
