The Royal Sovereign Stakes is a set weights race for colts & geldings and generally attracts more than handy types on their way to the better races on offer in weeks to come. It is the first group race available in the new year for three-year-olds in Sydney and competitors may continue on towards races like the Gr2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) in two weeks or the Gr1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) in around a month.
Lonhro (2002), Guineas (1998), Danewin (1995) and Shaftesbury Avenue (1990) are quality gallopers to have won this race. The Gr2 Light Fingers Stakes is the fillies equivalent of this event and takes place on the same day at Randwick.
Shoot Out (2010) won this event after finishing unplaced in the Magic Millions 3yo Trophy at the Gold Coast and recent winners of the Royal Sovereign Stakes have been Youthful Jack (2009) and El Cambio (2008).

2010 Royal Sovereign Stakes: Shoot Out came with a big finish to just nab More Than Great on the line by the narrowest of margins in a top effort. More Than Great raced on the pace and got to the lead inside the 100m mark and looked the winner until cut down close to home, while Viking Legend led and kicked in the straight and fought the race out strongly to be a close-up third.
