Randwick Guineas

The Randwick Guineas is a Group 1 race for three-year-olds that takes place each March at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres under set weight conditions and worth $350,000 in prizemoney. The 2010 Randwick Guineas was won by Shoot Out from Viking Legend with Captain Sonador third.

The winner of this race is exempt from ballot for the AJC Derby and Doncaster Hcp.

The Randwick Guineas is one of the better three-year-old races of the Sydney autumn carnival and has a history of attracting top quality gallopers. The Gr2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) two weeks earlier is a good lead up race to this event and three-year-olds may then go on to races such as the Gr2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) seven days later at Rosehill or the Gr1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) in a fortnight.

Some classy three-year-olds to have won this race include Weekend Hussler (2008), Arena (1999), Intergaze (1997), Octagonal (1996) and Veandercross in 1992.

Shoot Out (2010) won the Gr2 Royal Sovereign Stakes on his way to winning this race and he then went on to score in the premier 3yo race of the autumn, the Gr1 AJC Derby. Recent winners of the Randwick Guineas have been Metal Bender (2009) and Weekend Hussler (2008).

2010 Randwick Guineas: Shoot Out was always at the back of the field and he came from an impossible postion to weave through the field and finish very strongly for a brilliant win. In second place was Viking Legend who raced just off the pace all the way and was only beaten by a better horse on the day, while Captain Sonador came with a late run to get third.
