RA Lee Stakes

The RA Lee Stakes is a Group 3 open race that takes place annually late April or early May at Morphettville racecourse in Adelaide, South Australia. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres under set weight & penalty conditions and worth $150,000 in prizemoney. The 2011 RA Lee Stakes was won by Budriguez from Majestic Music with Red Colossus third.

Held on Goodwood Day, which is one of the biggest race days of the Adelaide autumn racing carnival, the RA Lee Stakes is held alongside the Gr1 Goodwood, Gr3 SA Oaks & Gr3 The Jansz National Stakes.

The RA Lee Stakes is an open race over 1600m and the set weights & penalty conditions suits the better performed gallopers in the race. It is a race predominantly tackled by local horses and generally assembles an average type field where more often than not the winner will go on to be simply a handy galloper, rather than anything special.

The long Morhpettville straight suits strong milers and the RA Lee Stakes will quite often attract any in-form Melbourne gallopers willing to make the trip over to Adelaide to take on the locals in this event.

Budriguez (2011) ran second in the Gr3 Victoria Handicap over 1400m at Caulfield on his way to winning this race and recent RA Lee Stakes winner include Majestic Music (2010) and Serious Speed (2009).
