Kewney Stakes

The Kewney Stakes is a Group 2 race for three-year-old fillies held annually each March at Flemington racecourse in Melbourne during the autumn racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres under set weight conditions with prizemoney of $400,000. The 2010 Kewney Stakes was won by Faint Perfume from Response with No Evidence Needed third.

The Kewney Stakes had a programming change in 2010 when the race distance was reduced to 1400 metres (from 1600m previously) to provide a higher quality race for fillies over less than a mile in the autumn.

The race takes place on Super Saturday of racing at Flemington racecourse in the Melbourne autumn and all races on the card are stakes races, with three high quality Gr1 events, the Newmarket Handicap, Australian Cup, and Australian Guineas.

The Kewney Stakes is the premier three-year-old fillies event held at Flemington during the autumn racing carnival. Outstanding fillies may prefer to take on the colts & geldings in the Gr1 Australian Guineas (1600m) on the same day as it is almost double the prizemoney if they are good enough to win.

The race tends to attract the better class fillies going around and races like the Gr3 Vanity Stakes (1200m), Gr2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1600m) and Gr2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) are excellent lead up races to this event.

The upcoming Sydney & Adelaide racing carnivals could be on the horizon for fillies contesting this event and Gallica (2009) went on to win the Gr1 Australiasian Oaks at Morphettville after taking out this race.

Faint Perfume (2010) won this event first-up from a spell after winning the Gr1 Crown Oaks the previous spring and recent winners of the Kewney Stakes have been Gallica (2009) and Zarita (2008).

2010 Kewney Stakes: Faint Perfume came from back in the field with a well time run to be in front when it mattered with the mares all fairly close together in a bit of a blanket finish. The second placegetter Response made her run from back in the field with the winner and was a good effort, while No Evidence Needed battled strongly to hold third place.
