Hobartville Stakes

The Hobartville Stakes is a Group 2 race for three-year-olds that takes place annually in late February at Rosehill racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 1400 metres under set weight conditions and worth $200,000 in prizemoney. The 2010 Hobartville Stakes was won by Monton from Shoot Out with Captain Sonador third.

The race has been named the 'Veolia Environmental Service Stakes' in recent years.

The Hobartville Stakes is a good quality race for three-year-olds and is the ideal lead up race to the Gr1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) in a fortnight. The Hobartville is run under set weight conditions which favours the better horses entered for the event and the Gr3 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) provides a good lead up to this race.

Any 3yo tackling this race will most likely head towards the better class three-year-old races to come during the carnival, including races such as the the Gr3 Phar Lap Stakes or Gr1 Rosehill Guineas at Rosehill in March.

Monton (2010) won a 3yo race at Rosehill over this trip three weeks prior to scoring in this event and rrecent winners of the Hobartville Stakes have Mic Mac (2009) and Serious Speed (2008).

2010 Hobartville Stakes: Monton raced on the pace behind the leader (More Than Great) and was asked for his effort around the 200m mark and then he forged clear of Manhattan Rain who had got to the lead and then Monton sprinted quickly to go on and score a good win. Shoot Out was always well back and flashed home late to grab second, while Captain Sonador made up a lot of ground in the straight to claim third place.
