The Golden Slipper Stakes is a Group 1 race for two-year-olds held annually in April at Rosehill racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 1200 metres under set weight conditions and is worth $3,500,000 in prizemoney. The 2013 Golden Slipper Stakes was won by Overreach from Sidestep with Sweet Idea third.
The Golden Slipper Stakes was first run in 1957 with prizemoney of 20,000 pounds and it has grown to become the world's richest race for two-year-old thoroughbreds and Sydney's showpiece event of the autumn carnival.
The Golden Slipper Stakes is the richest race for two-year-olds in Australia and is the premier event for youngsters in this country. There are a number of Slipper lead up races for two-year-olds at Rosehill including the Gr2 Reisling Slipper Trial & Gr2 Magic Night Stakes for fillies and the Gr2 Todman Slipper Trial & Gr2 Pago Pago Stakes for colts & geldings.
These races provide Golden Slipper ballot exemptions for winners as well as valuable experience over the course & distance for any two-year-olds planning to run in this $3,500,000 race. The Golden Slipper has an illustrious history and always attracts the very best 2yo gallopers each and every year.
More often than not winners of this race will go on to be stars of the turf, and some of the better two-year-olds to win a Slipper recently include Sepoy (2011), Miss Finland (2006), Dance Hero (2004), Belle de Jour (2000), Guineas (1997), Bint Marscay (1993), and the champion 2yo of his time Todman who won the inaugrual running of the race in 1957.
Headway (2nd in 2009) went on to win the Gr1 Coolmore Stud Stakes on Derby Day at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup carnival, while Manhattan Rain (3rd in 2009) finished runner-up to So You Think in the time honoured Gr1 WS Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
More recently, talented Gai Waterhouse colt Pierro (2012) managed to take out the Sydney autumn 2yo triple crown, winning the Gr1 AJC Sires Produce Stakes & Gr1 AJC Champagne Stakes at Randwick after winning the Golden Slipper. Guelph (4th in 2013) went on to win the AJC Sires produce Stakes after running fourth in the Golden Slipper.
Overreach (2013) won the Reisling Stakes over 1200m at Rosehill prior to winning this event and recent Golden Slipper winners have been Pierro (2012) and Sepoy (2011).
