Frank Packer Plate

The Frank Packer Plate is a Group 3 race for three-year-olds that takes place each April at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales. The race is run over a distance of 2000 metres under set weight conditions and worth $125,000 in prizemoney. The 2012 Frank Packer Plate was won by Fat Al from Ambidexter with Rekindled Alliance third.

The Frank Packer Plate takes place on Sydney Cup Day where four Group 1 races are up for grabs, including the Sydney Cup, All Aged Stakes, AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes and AJC Champagne Stakes.

The Frank Packer Plate is a middle distance race for three-year-olds over 2000m that suits those 3yo gallopers who did not contest the AJC Australian Derby or AJC Australian Oaks over 2400m, or any three-year-olds found the Derby or Oaks too strong and are looking for an easier distance race to compete in.

Normally a race for more than handy types rather than the elite, quality gallopers Might And Power (1997) and Juggler (1995) managed to win this race as a three-year-old before going on to become stars of the turf.

Earlier three-year-old races during the carnival over 2000m such as Gr2 Tulloch Stakes for colts & geldings at Rosehill or the Gr3 Adrian Knox Stakes for fillies at Randwick are typical lead up races to the Frank Packer Plate.

Fat Al (2012) won the Gr3 Carbine Club Stakes over 1600m at Randwick on his way to winning this event and recent Frank Packer Plate winners include Shootoff (2010) and Dariana (2010).
