The Expressway Stakes is the first weight-for-age group race of the new year in Sydney and it suits fit, in-form sprinters or returning stars of the turf. The race has been won by some of our finest gallopers, including the likes of Lonhro (2003), Saintly (1996), Joanne (1992) and At Sea in 1988.
Horses contesting this race may continue on to the Gr2 Apollo Stakes in a fortnight at the same track as it is raced under the same weight-for-age conditions but steps up in distance to 1400 metres.
Rangirangdoo (2010) won this race first-up from a spell on a heavy track and recent winners of the Expressway Stakes have been Burdekin Blues (2009), Paratroopers (2008) and Mentality (2007).

2010 Expressway Stakes: Rangirangdoo sat on the pace in second spot until straightening where his class told and he ran to the lead inside the 200m and fought on strongly for a top win. Dao Dao was always handy and ran on well to claim second, while McClintock led easily and battled on to finish a close-up third.
