The Doncaster Prelude is a Group 3 3yo & upwards handicap race held each year in April at Randwick racecourse in Sydney, New South Wales during the autumn racing carnival. The race is run over a distance of 1600 metres and offers $125,000 in prizemoney. The 2012 Doncaster Prelude was won by Fast Clip from Speediness with Alma's Fury third.
The Doncaster Prelude is the ideal lead-up race to the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap which is held at the same track & distance the following week and it gives horses a chance to have a final tune-up for the biggest mile race of the autumn in Sydney.
Those gallopers who can race on the pace or finish strongly are suited to a race like this and the 1600m distance and long Randwick straight gives all horses an equal chance in the run.
Earlier carnival races such as the Gr3 Newcastle Newmarket Hcp over 1400m at Newcastle or the Gr2 Ajax Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill are typical lead-up races to this event, as they are run under similar conditions and a natural progression for gallopers heading towards this race or the upcoming Doncaster.
In recent times Brilliant Light (2010) ran second in the Newcastle Newmarket and then won the Ajax Stakes on his way to victory in this event, before going on to run a top third in the Doncaster Handicap the following week.
Fast Clip (2012) ran unplaced in the Ajax Stakes on his way to winning this race and recent Doncaster Prelude winners include My Kingdom Of Fife (2011) and Brilliant Light (2010).
